September 2003 School Supplies

At the beginning of the school year, we were able to collect donations of school supplies, back packs, pencils, pens, notebooks, crayons, etc., from the Houston area.  These supplies went to the families of 4 Ceremonial singers for their children.

December 2003 Clothes and Food Drive and Delivery

Beginning in the fall of 2003 people from the Austin, Bryant, Houston and Dallas, Texas areas started to collect clothes, coats, shoes, blankets, diapers, food, etc. and by Christmas Day, we had a trailer loaded with boxes of assorted items.  A few of us spent Christmas night putting together family "staple boxes" (flour, sugar, beans, rice, coffee, can goods, pasta, baking powder, cooking oil, etc. and assorted tolietries, toilet paper, shampoo, tooth paste, tooth brushes, soap, etc.).  We sorted and loaded the boxes of clothes according to sex, age and size.  We had some much wonderful help with the clothes sorting and we would like to thank Ann (Grandma) Martinez, for all of her hard work, which made the distribution process go so much smoother.  We also had a wonderful lady who is now on the board, Kathleen (Kate) Lopez, initiate a food drive at her office, which not only collected food, but also cash donations for a food buy.
We had a Ford Explorer donated for use of this trip, many thanks Joyce (G-Ma) Day and a 12 foot covered trailer, thank you Todd (Mr. T) Cowan.  Without the help of all of these folks and many others this would not have been possible.

We left Texas at 6:00 AM on December 26, 2003 and arrived in South Dakota in the wee morning hours of December 27, 2003.  After a couple of hours of shut eye, we started our distribution.  Our first stop, was in Paradise, which is located between Rosebud and St. Francis, South Dakota.  We arrived at Paradise and started to unload boxes of food, blankets, clothes, etc.

Our next stop, was in and around the community of White River, South Dakota.  We were able distribute boxes to a group of Lakota Ceremonial singers and their families, another family in a near by community who care for many Ceremonial singers, who are in need of housing, clothes, blankets, food, etc.
Our last stop, was to an elderly woman, who lives between White River and Mission, South Dakota.  She has dedicated her life to raising not only her children and her childrens children, but any one who is in need of a home.  This lady is quite a beautiful soul, one we felt honored and blessed to have been allowed to meet.

Grocery Account

In December 2003, we met with the owner of a local grocery store, the Wig Wam, in White River, South Dakota.  The owner was kind enough to allow us to set up food accounts for families in the area.  The food accounts will allow families to receive grocery store credit each month.  Currently we have two families in this program, who are receiving $100.00 a month assistance.  Our goal this year, is to set up additional accounts for families to receive $100.00 a month store credit.  The purpose of the accounts is to contribute to the families by helping to provide the day to day necessities in these difficult economic times and locales.
