July 2004 Clothes and Food Drive and Delivery
Beginning in the Spring of 2004 , we started started collecting donations of food, clothing diapers, tooth paste, shampoo, etc. donations from the Houston and Dallas, Texas areas. We loaded the boxes into a flat bed trailer on Saturday, July 10, 2004 and hit the road truck and trailer full on Thursday, July 15, 2004. We were able to get the supplies delivered the next day, July 16, 2004 to the community of White River, South Dakota. I would like to thank Ann (Grandma) Martinez for sorting the clothes according to sex and size, this made the distribution so much more efficient, not to mention putting together the kids goodie boxes. A special thanks to our own Kate Lopez for initiating and coordinating the food and clothes drive in the Houston area and of course to all who stored these boxes at their houses until we could get them shipped and those who helped loading the trailer and truck.

December 2004 Clothes and Food Drive and Delivery
We, seven (7) of us, left at 9:00 AM Sunday, December 26, 2004, from Rosser, Texas, headed for White River, South Dakota. We had a 24 foot trailer loaded full of food, clothes, blankets, toys, etc. and lots of excitement. The trip up was uneventful of any type of mechanical difficulties, yet chalked full of laughter and stories.

We arrived in White River around 3:30 AM on Monday, December 27, 2004. Everyone was tired from the long ride, yet ready to begin our duties as soon as possible. After a short nap, we were off to meet one of the Chiefs and his family and members from his community to start the distribution for the Rosebud community. After a short visit over coffee and telling of funny stories, we started the unloading of items to be distributed. This went by entirely to quick, yet the visit and laughter with everyone will stay with us for months to come.

Next, a group of us took a truckload of food, clothes, blankets, toys, etc. over to an elder woman of the White River Community, who is known for taking care of all the children in the community who end up with nowhere to go or live. She was very surprised by the visit, the delivery and also of being notified of a grocery store account being set up for her at a local grocery store.
While this was occurring, another group of us took a truckload of food, clothes, blankets, etc. over to the community of Ironwood. After unloading and a short visit we met back up and shared the experiences of our deliveries. Everyones spirits were high in spite of the lack of sleep. Later, we met with Chief Harold White Horse and First Lady Elva, where some members of our group had prepared homemade enchiladas for dinner. We were also joined by (two) 2 of the White Horse Singers.
Later, we all met at Chief White Horse's house, where we were honored with a prayer, gifts and an Honoring Song. Needless to say, we were all quite surprised by this and incredibly touched by the kindness and generosity. We then all sat around the big drum, sang songs, told stories and laughed until our sides hurt. It was a late night, yet one which I think will stay with us until we are able to make our journey again next Christmas.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in making this journey possible. The greatest gift in life is the gift of giving and this gift was given to us through all the contributions of food, clothes, blankets, toys, $$$, time, etc., so we could in turn participate in the great gift of giving.
